As a cayuco landed in Tenerife on Saturday delivering 78 people to shore with a further three thought to have disappeared into the night those on board another boat carrying Moroccan migrants which overturned near Lanzarote were not so lucky. Four drowned and 18 were reported missing.

This tragedy is going to play out again and again despite the best efforts of the International Organisation of Migration and spokesman Youssou N’Dour.

Deeply moving as the IOM campaign might be, according to fisherman Ameth Niang it is doomed to failure. “Warning would-be immigrants of the dangers involved in reaching Europe will have no effect, he said, since “people will leave because they do not have a choice.”
