Tenerife Hiking is a new blog that looks very promising. The walk descriptions are very descriptive and provides plenty of landmark detail to keep hikers on the right path as well as a summary of the hike which helpfully includes a difficulty rating.

With one member of a currently visiting branch of the family suffering from ’sun scream’ it seems appropriate to pass on some advice I received recently from a dermatologist. Though I am not pale-skinned, my skin is fairer than the typical Spanish/Latino skin types you will see here. The dermatologist was very firm that loose long sleeved cotton shirts and light trousers, large brimmed floppy hats and high factor suncream were essential for lighter skinned expats living in Tenerife.
Just in case you are not convinced here are some scary facts:
- Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world.
- Suffering just one blistering sunburn in your life will increase your chances of developing skin cancer by 60%
- 80% of your lifetime sun damage is received by the time you are 18 years old.
These and more are discussed at Cancer Crusaders
And here are a couple more sites specifically aimed at getting kids toi cover up in the sun.
Sunwise – teaching kids to take care in the sun.
Sun Care for Kids
Quick tip: If your shadow is longer than you are then you are safe in the sun. If your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun can burn your skin.

Just in case you fancy something a little different with your sundowners at the seafront, I recommend you try a popular Tenerife dish of camerones. Though the camareros might pull your leg and call this a dish of bichos (insects, bugs), this little plate of shrimps is very tasty indeed.
My kids, taking the bichos comment on board, looked on in horror as Gaga and I tucked into this plate of ‘bugs’ and were for once quite satisfied to eat what they had been given, just in case we force fed them bichos instead. LOL. I wonder what they would make of haggis.
So according to a Boots survey, Tenerife is the second most embarrassing holiday destination after Benidorm. Funny that! I find the British tourists in Tenerife swilling alcohol like they expect to fly back to prohibition, fighting and throwing up in the streets of Las Americas pretty damn embarrassing too.
Winner of this week’s No Surprises There Then Award must go to Anna Coogan of the Irish Herald who reports that alcohol consumption and neglecting to use a condom results in an increased chance of contracting an STI while abroad.
Ms. Coogan’s article on ‘Hellish Holidays‘ includes figures from a study of holidaymakers to Tenerife which documented that half of those under 25 who visited the island had it off with a new partner while the same could be said of a quarter of those over the age of 25.
Well duh! Lay off the Sex on the Beaches and maybe you won’t go home with ‘Spanish Tummy’.
Although I always appreciate receiving email through eTenerife.com, one kind of message always makes my heart sink. It usually starts along the lines of, “On my recent holiday in Tenerife I was approached by a young man/woman who offered me a scratchcard…”
The email goes on to describe more or less the same scenario as the I-Got-Scammed email before it. And the one before that one and the one before that. What is so depressing is that there really is not much that can be done to help. The victim may well have the power of European consumer law on his side but the Timeshare/Holiday Club scammers know that law inside-out and upside-down and more often than not can scrape through the cracks by delaying mail, ignoring phonecalls and such like until the mandatory ‘cooling off’ period has slipped by.
Even more depressing is that the same company names come up again and again. If I know who the culprits are, so for sure do the powers that be. Why are the scammers allowed to continue to rip people off?
If you are tempted to go along for a timeshare or holiday club presentation while on holiday in Tenerife (or elsewhere in Spain) you should at least know what to expect before you go.
