A recent poll suggested that more Americans would switch on to watch the Oscars if movie stars would just shut up about their political views. Other gripes about the Academy Awards included an excess of Jack Nicholson. It seems the producers rely on cutting away to his wolfish grin to make the on stage jokes seem funnier.

Poor old Jack! I can’t think why, but when I read this little ditty by Ramón de Campoamor, he sprang to mind immediately.

“Porque, lo mismo a mi que a todo viejo,
Eu materias de gracia femeuina,
Me hace feliz el genero diablejo.”

Campoamor. El Quinto No Matar

What have they done to TFS lately? I don’t know how families arriving for the first time at Tenerife’s South airport cope as, unless they have already decided to get to their hotel by bus, the access to taxis is blocked by a temporary sheet wall. I know if I had just landed after a four hour flight with a fractious four year old and petulant princess in tow I would not be eager to herd them on to public transport.

Inside the airport changes at the arrival area force incomers to skip under or through the temporary cord barrier or walk miles to reach the opening at the end of it. It is very odd indeed and had absolutely no effect on the bottle-necking of people waiting to welcome those discharged through the arrivals gates.

Thankfully the new Direct Airport Transfer Service provides some much needed relief to stressed mothers as they herd their clutches of tired bairns through the arrivals area. The service includes a ‘greeter’ to wave you down and carry your bags (bless!). Prices for the service are of course higher than the local taxi rates but still seem reasonable and especially worth it at the end of a tiring journey.

Other benefits include free child seats and vehicles seating up to 16 for larger groups. Prices are as advertised on-line and there are no hidden surcharges. I like the fact that it can all be arranged and paid for before hand so all you need to do for that final leg of your journey from airport to hotel is crash in the back of the car and sleep to destination. No worries about digging around for the right change or wondering if the driver is taking the ’scenic route’ to increase the fare.

The lengths people will go to to break a world record!

According to The Press Ass-ociation 100 sorry souls braved the cold to get together in St Pancras station in London dressed only in their underpants. You have to wonder about the organisers of this record breaking get-together. There are surely more than 100 people willing to bare most of their bodies in London. Unless of course they are all currently wandering around Las Americas in barely-there bikinis or jelly-wobble bum-revealing shorts.

Drag your little darlings along to the Mundi Juego at La Rambla in Las Galletas for Toys, Games and Stories (in Spanish obviously) on November 19, 20 and 21 between 4.30 and 6.30. Kids less than 6 years old should be accompanied by an adult.

What should you look for when deciding where to open a business, buy your dream house or stage a Hollywood movie? Location, location, location! And as locations go, Teide’s lunar landscape couldn’t be better as a stand-in for the Moon for the first ESA Lunar Robotics Challenge.

Water trapped in ancient ice deposits on the moon could not only speak volumes about the very distant past of that cold star but also possibly support life stations sometime in the future. But to know more scientists need a reliable robotic friend to go and gather the ice for them and that’s where the rovers come in.

Eight European teams developed robots for the event though only Cesar, Germany’s entry completed the challenge successfully. Nevertheless Francesco Feliciani of ESA’s Telecom Directorate was pleased with the overall performance of the robots saying: “The successful live transmission of the videos streams from the LRC proves that the technology is ready to be used in real life applications.

The Times reports sky high prices for flights to Tenerife and elsewhere on the back of the XL airline collapse.

Its nice to know that in these hard times companies like Thomson are willing to go the extra mile isn’t it. Thomson obviously tried its very hardest not to take the mickey. They only increased a flight for two from Gatwick to Lanzarote from £460 to £1,342.

Good grief.

If you believe everything you read or see on the internet, you may be under the impression that everything is rosy in the gardens of real estate agents in Tenerife despite the thundering crashes being heard elsewhere around the world.

It is not. How else would you explain whole streets without one estate agents office. Not so long ago they were popping up like mushrooms.

Another indication of the sickly state of many property agencies on the island is the sudden lack of interest in paying for advertising or marketing on the internet despite that being one of the most cost efficient ways to get the word out.

Pages of internet content, highly relevant, mature and well ranked are left to go stale as incumbent advertisers slash their budgets to the bone. Understandably in times of trouble, its the little guys that get the pointy end of the stick. In this case, that means me. While rent on locales, staff, utilities, taxes etc must be paid, internet advertising is expendable.

And so, if you would like to pick up some prime internet property at rock bottom prices now is the time to do so especially if you are interested in reaching potential property buyers or golfers. Contact me for more details on info@etenerife.com with I’ll Pay Peanuts as the subject.
